Hey Guys,

With the Pixar film WALL E set to release soon, we thought we’d take a look at the legacy that WALL E is following. Though Pixar seems to make hit after hit (and we do indeed love them for it), them seem to have copied an idea that we’ve reported on before.

Set to release in 09′ or 10′, the remake of Short Circuit, the 1986 cult classic about a robot who goes haywire after being struck by lightening and gets a personality, only reminds us that WALL E might be just another Hollywood copy-cat. Now we don’t want to bash Pixar here, we love WALL E already and will most likely be waiting at 12am for tickets to the first show. But in the true Hollywood spirit, Pixar has taken an idea already done and put a new CGI face to it. Now it’s hard to say what was though of first, WALL E, being it takes years to develope a CGI movie; or Short Circuit because it has been on the scene much longer. Either way it is worth looking back to see what movies used to be like.

Short Circuit is my number one rated film of all time because of the work it took to get it done. Eric Allard spent a year and 1.5 million dollars on a fully animatronic robot puppet that could be used as if it was real. Now I’m not saying CGI isn’t an art in itself, I have nothing but respect for the Pixar animators, but I feel like no matter how good this movie is, it would be over-shadowing a classic. Anyone who grew up with the film will tell you what a joy Short Circuit was, I’m just surprised Pixar was so quick to mimic it. After all it’s no longer a secret that WALL E was indeed modeled after J5, and while we don’t have a problem with that, it would be nice to see some appreciation for classic films by leaving them alone. While I’ll also be first in line to see the Short Circuit remake, sometimes I wish Hollywood could cut it out.

WALL E is shaping up to be an amazing movie, I will probably buy my first Blu-Ray player just to watch it on DVD. Call me opinionated, but as great as WALL E will be, we should never forget that some ideas are inspired by other ideas, it’s something we all do from time to time (remember…we LOVE Pixar!).
