Hey guys,
Well as if we weren’t surprised to hear this. Turns out the iPhone’s dropped price of $199 is only on the Apple side of things. AT&T is still here to screw you.
Well believe it or not AT&T’s iPhone prices are different than that of Apple’s. While going to an Apple store on July 11 will get you a $199 iPhone, it won’t get you the service the way you thought. New AT&T customers will be charged the additional $10 for the data service, not included in the regular contract. Also current AT&T customers (such as myself), will be charged the full price of an iPhone (not yet set) if there contract is not up for renewal. In other words, someone like me who was looking forward to getting the phone because of its lower price and not having to worry about renewal dates is now in trouble. AT&T doesn’t expect sales to be any different, but really, are they that greedy?
As angry as it makes me there is a way around it. Just don’t buy your phone from AT&T stores. I already have an AT&T account so I can just get the phone from Apple, transfer my number with iTunes, and then just forget about it. If AT&T wants to once again hold a monopoly over the phone then I will not be involved. My suggestion to all current AT&T customers is this, get the iPhone through Apple, activate through iTunes and forget it. However my heart goes out to aspiring AT&T customers, who will most likely be taken for more of a ride than your wallet will allow.
Dude, C’mon.

Matt,
Do some research before jumping to blog posts. Pretty much nothing you said was correct.
ATT has already publicly stated that current att customers who buy a 3g iphone at the $199/$299 cost respectively will sign a new 2 year contract that will simply replace their current contract (and not extend it).
Further, while apple stores may sell the phone (this is still up for debate) - it will not be possible to activate from itunes.

Hi Bob,
I just wanted to address your comment personally. We do extensive research before “jumping into posts”. AT&T has indeed confirmed that the price will change from $199/299 into a new price that has not yet been announced, they say so on their site. Also Apple will sell the phone at there stores for sure, AT&T is just a contract holder, it is still Apple’s product and they have reserved rights to sell just like the previous model. Also replacing a contract is not possible if you have a family plan such as myself, in which case I will only be paying the additional 10 or 20 dollar data fee. However (because we do research what we talk about) the iTunes activation is up for debate. I was sure it was able to be activated that way until I recently saw some news saying that feature will be gone. While I do appreciate your comment, we have researched this issue and any information was pulled from Apple and AT&T’s site respectively.
Thank You
-Matt
